Peugeot gearing up for its second run in India with new plant at Sanand, Gujarat
PSA Peugeot Citroen, the second largest European car manufacturer is gearing up for it’s comeback to India with its new plant at Sanand, Gujarat. Peugeot today conducted the bhoomi puja and the ceremonious ground-breaking ritual at the site of its forthcoming factory in Sanand, Gujarat. This is the second foray of the French automaker in India after its first tie-up with Premier Automobiles Limited(PAL) came to an end in 1997. The Peugeot plant in Sanand will be spread across 400 acres and will cost the carmaker around Rs. 4,000 crore to set up. The new plant will have an annual capacity of producing 1.65 lakh cars. “I take this opportunity to reiterate and reassure you of the longstanding commitment and dedication that we devote to this project. Peugeot will grow together with you by bringing the best of its passion, know how and technology to incredible India, vibrant Gujarat and to all those involved in making our journey successful,” shared Vincent Rambaud, Director General of Peugeot at the event. Peugeot also plans to create an Automotive Skills Development Institute in Sanand to contribute to the further growth and development of the automotive cluster in the area. According to officials, the company was targeting at-least 80% localisation in its cars. Peugeot’s first car for India could be the 508 sedan which could be followed by the recently unveiled 2012 Peugeot 208 hatchback.
